According to an exclusive report from le10sport.com, Newcastle United have stepped up their pursuit of Lille starlet Boubakary Soumare despite the player rejecting a move back in January – with this report stating the Magpies are willing to offer him a £1.6 million salary.
Soumare, who has accumulated an impressive 90% pass accuracy this season, shining in midfield over 15 Ligue 1 starts, could be back on Newcastle’s radar as they attempt to seduce the youngster with a doubled salary if he moves to Tyneside. However, given that would only make him the 14th highest-paid player at St. James’ Park, with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Javier Manquillo and even Yoshinori Muto earning more (spotrac.com), it could take an even higher offer to persuade a player who has been likened to World Cup winner Paul Pogba (Goal).
Compared to Shelvey, Newcastle’s highest earner, Soumare has, of course, bettered the Englishman’s inferior pass success rate (74.2%) whilst averaging more completed dribbles (1.1) this season (WhoScored) – perhaps hinting that he could definitely be worth the money. However, as revealed by the Shields Gazette in late January, Soumare rejected the move to Tyneside despite Lille accepting a £35 million bid for the player. In this latest attempt to lure the promising youngster, Steve Bruce’s side have now offered a £1.6 million salary, double his current wages, in order to tempt the midfielder with a Premier League move.
Did Newcastle ever have a chance with Boubakary Soumare?
Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Man United were also monitoring the 20-year-old in January (The Sun), with Newcastle facing stiff competition if they want to land, arguably, one of the most promising midfielders in Europe.
