Newcastle United make transfer decision amid slow deadline day

Much like most of the window thus far, the Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been pretty disappointed today.

Indeed, while deadline day evokes so much excitement for many fans up and down the country, the Magpies have barely enjoyed the best summer window as of yet. While that could still change, transfer news to have emanated of late doesn’t seem to suggest too many more comings or goings.

According to BBC Sport journalist Ian Dennis, the Toon Army have decided to KEEP Dwight Gayle at St. James’ Park this season after Championship side Fulham made a bid for him.

The 26-year-old is a hugely popular figure on Tyneside after helping fire the club to promotion last season, though struggled in Newcastle’s first two games of the season and the arrival of Joselu could push him further down the pecking order.

So the idea of receiving big money for him in order to fund a replacement had been discussed by our resident Geordies, though it seems the club have opted to keep the ex-Crystal Palace man.

While that would suggest no new forward is to come in, the fact that Gayle is to stay is no by means a bad thing.

Landlord’s Verdict:

Gayle can be an asset if he’s played correctly. Though leading the line in the Premier League may be too difficult for him, the idea of him running off the likes of Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic gives Rafa Benitez an added dimension up front.
