Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be cursing their luck after learning of news about an injury to a key man in a position that already is lacking depth due to other medical issues.
Indeed, goalkeeper Karl Darlow had to sit out the Spain training camp friendly with Royal Antwerp as he picked up a knock on his shoulder during a training session. The stopper would surely have been used as the main shot-stopper during the match against the Belgium outfit, however, Rafa Benitez had to use Martin Dubravka for the 90 minutes, before handing Nathan Harker an opportunity.
The injury is not thought to keep Darlow out for too long, with his manager keen for him to be available for the bench when they take on Huddersfield Town in two Saturday’s time. Benitez stated that the ‘keeper would be assessed closely over the next ten days and was hopeful that he would be ready for the clash with the Terriers.
“We think so. He has a little discomfort in his shoulder,” he told the Chronicle Live.
“We have to be careful with him – that’s it.”
Rob Elliot is already out with a back injury, whilst Harker is not yet considered to be ready for Premier League action should he be needed.
The Newcastle fans in the Tavern will be wondering what they can do to catch a break, with a number of injuries in key areas of the pitch. Thankfully, Darlow’s knock does not seem to be too concerning and should ease any concerns. Hopefully for them, the fairly long break until their next game allows the former Nottingham Forest ace time to recover.
