Newcastle United: Manquillo, Sterry and Elliot tipped for potential 2020 moves

Newcastle United fringe players Javier Manquillo, Jamie Sterry and Rob Elliot could all find themselves looking for new sides next summer, according to the Mirror.

The Magpies are facing a potential major overhaul of the playing squad at St. James’ Park in the upcoming transfer windows, as the North East outfit have key decisions to make over the contracts of 20 players.

Eight Newcastle players from the first team and those omitted from Steve Bruce’s 25-man Premier League squad are out of contract in the summer of 2020 (TransferMarkt), while the Toon will also have to decide whether or not to activate their option to purchase Jetro Willems following his one-season loan from Eintracht Frankfurt.

A further 13 players will reach the end of their terms in 2021, including Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie, Isaac Hayden and DeAndre Yedlin, but that quartet are expected to enter into negotiations over extending their contracts.

Of those already inside the final 12 months of their current deals, Federico Fernandez, Ki Sung-Yueng and Karl Darlow are said to be in with a chance of earning extensions, which could see Manquillo, Sterry and Elliot left without a club.

If Newcastle are to allow Manquillo, Sterry or Elliot to leave St. James’ Park as a free agent next summer, the Magpies would arguably be best equipped to cope with the loss of Sterry – who has not played in the Premier League since May 2016 (TransferMarkt).

The 23-year-old’s most natural position is at right-back, though he faces competition from Yedlin, Manquillo and summer signing Emil Krafth for minutes in the role.

Manquillo also stands at an advantage to the Newcastle-born defender through his ability to play at left-back as well as on the right, which offers Bruce an alternative should he lose Willems and Paul Dummett through injuries, with the Welshman adept in the role despite his manager’s current preference to play him at centre-half.

Elliot also faces a serious fight for minutes at St. James’ Park, as Martin Dubravka is the undisputed number one in the North East – featuring in each Premier League game available since February 5, 2018 (TransferMarkt).
