Newcastle lost their second Premier League match on the bounce on Saturday as their eight-game unbeaten run now feels like an eternity ago, and The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas delivered a scathing verdict after the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.
The Magpies are well and truly on pace to get sucked into the relegation battle, as they now sit just seven points clear of West Ham, who are in 18th place. The performance at Selhurst Park on Saturday was truly horrific, as Steve Bruce’s side mustered just eight shots in 90 minutes, per Whoscored, leading Douglas to slam the display and also single out Nabil Bentaleb.
They don't score (or really even shoot), they can't defend anymore, midfield non-existent. Why Bentaleb continues when he's offered nothing so far. 3 games without scoring. They're bang in the relegation fight.
Where's next win coming from?

Indeed, Bentaleb has not impressed since signing for the club in January, and his individual statistics from the 1-0 defeat do not make for good reading. According to Sofascore, the former Spurs man won an abysmal four of his 14 attempted duels (28.5%), as the visitors repeatedly lost the midfield battle. Next up is a home clash against Burnley, who after their comfortable victory against Bournemouth today will be feeling very confident.
