Despite succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa on Monday evening, shot-stopping favourite Martin Dubravka has come out with some positivity ahead of a clash against the Premier League champions.
The Slovakian was one of Newcastle’s star performers, despite arguably being at fault for the first goal, after making a flurry of fine saves to keep Villa from increasing their lead to an even more convincing level.
Dubravka’s solidarity between the sticks has prompted him to show more positivity ahead of the match against last season’s domestic-treble winners Manchester City – a fixture where the keeper’s resolve will be tested to the utter limit.
Even though the Sky Blues dropped points in their last outing at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s side are seemingly back on track in the league after squeezing past an in-form Chelsea side – with nothing but a resounding victory on the squad’s mind when they face the Magpies.
However, speaking to NUFC TV via Inside Futbol, Dubravka insists they could shock the country with a win at St James’ Park.
Is Steve Bruce taking Newcastle down?
“I think we beat other top sides, so why not try to do the same thing [Against City]?,” explained the keeper.
“We have to start with these basic things, start on the training [ground], if anybody needs to do extra, do it.
“It’s going to be a tough opponent, but you never know.”
Indeed, while this does seem like an impossible task, the Sky Blues have already lost three games in the league so far this campaign – so if the Magpies stay resolute, organised and compact – anything can happen at the weekend.
