Rafael Benitez will surely target a full-back in the coming weeks to allow him to change Newcastle’s formation.

The Spaniard was given little funds to improve the squad during the summer which resulted in a poor run of form that left the Magpies in the wrong half of the Premier League table. Benitez stated it would be a ‘miracle’ if he saved the club from relegation and confirmed his thoughts still stood following the 4-0 defeat against Liverpool. Fortunately, the January transfer window will give him the opportunity to bolster his ranks.

According to reports, signing a new full back is high on his list of priorities with Paul Dummett the only recognised left-sided defender at the club. While Dummett prefers a flat back four, Benitez has often utilised wing backs and he has struggled. Signing a defender capable of playing both roles will be a must in January.

One man Benitez could target is Liverpool outcast – Alberto Moreno. Valued at £8.1m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard joined Liverpool after winning the Europa League with Sevilla and made a decent start to life at Anfield. However, a string of erratic performances saw Moreno lose his place in the team with Jurgen Klopp using James Milner at left-back. Following the signing of Andy Robertson, Moreno has been unable to reclaim his place in the starting eleven. An interview conducted last week criticised Klopp which makes a January departure even more likely.

Indeed, the 26-year-old did enjoy a decent spell in the side before getting injured and allowing Robertson to take his place which will give Benitez hope that he can rediscover his best form. Moreno can play in a flat back four but also has the pace to play further up the field if necessary. If Benitez can help him mature as a footballer – this deal could prove to be a bargain.
