Newcastle United: New signing Danny Rose is better than Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, suggests Kevin Campbell

Former footballer Kevin Campbell believes that Newcastle United loan signing Danny Rose is a better defender than Ben Chilwell – and big clubs will be after him once his temporary switch to St. James’ Park comes to an end.

Rose sealed a loan move until the end of the season earlier this week – a deal which was labelled as a ‘big coup’ by Steve Bruce – as the Magpies added to their decimated ranks at left-back following injuries to Paul Dummett and Jetro Willems. Speaking on TalkSPORT, Campbell suggested that Rose is a better defensive operator than his England counterpart Chilwell, despite admitting that the Leicester City full-back is a better outlet going forward.

He said: “Danny Rose, I think is probably the best left-back, if you ask me – all-round. I know Chilwell’s probably better going forward, but I think the first thing I look at is defending – can you defend? And Danny Rose can defend. I think he’s a better defender than Chilwell.

“So the point of the matter is he’s going there for football reasons. I think right now, he needs to play, get to the summer and see where it lies because I think him as a free agent, there’ll be some big clubs after Danny.”

Campbell’s comparisons between Rose and Chilwell seem to hold up, with the latter certainly demonstrating his attacking influence for the Foxes in scoring once and assisting three times in the Premier League this season.

Meanwhile, Rose is yet to directly contribute to a goal in the league, though he does record more tackles (1.5), clearances (2.5) and blocks per game (0.5) than Chilwell. That said, the Leicester man does not trail by too much in any of those departments.

Nevertheless, the statistics do still back up Campbell’s claim, though whether or not Rose is better at defending, perhaps the real test will be who is selected at left-back by Gareth Southgate at this summer’s European Championships.

That would arguably be a more assured sign of who the national manager deems a better all-round defender, and with Rose set for game time on Tyneside, perhaps he will be able to stake a claim for the international berth which both players have been fighting for in recent months.
