Predictably plenty of Magpies have been reacting to Jonjo Shelvey's latest contract extension, keeping the midfielder at St James' Park until at least 2023.

Speaking to NUFC TV via the club's official website, Shelvey said: "It feels like a home. The people here, ever since I came to the club, have made me feel so welcome. I've had some good times and some bad times here, but it's mainly good and it's just an enjoyable place to come in and work, and the city in general has been really good for me."

Since moving to Tyneside from Swansea City in 2016, the former England international has struggled for consistency, only registering 13 goals and 19 assists in 130 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Admittedly Shelvey is the club's leading goalscorer in the Premier League this season after scoring 5 goals in 16 games. Shockingly the 28-year-old is yet to provide a single assist in the English top flight in 2020 (Transfermarkt).

Steve Bruce's Black and Whites currently lie in 14th place and face rivals Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday. Lots of fans will be anxious for Shelvey to turn his statistics around if the club are to avoid relegation this year.

Many Mags have been ripping into the announcement online, with some members of the Toon Army mocking the "underwhelming" news. One fan added the board have "made a big mistake" whilst another suggested it was a "bad decision."
