Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are still yet to get over the brilliance of Saturday’s victory, as they managed to inflict a 3-0 defeat on relegation contenders Southampton.
The Magpies delivered one of their most impressive performances so far this season against the Saints at the weekend, with the all-important three points going a long way to ensuring their Premier League safety. And, with the club keen to improve on their January transfer window deficiencies, it appears that they already have their eyes set on one player, as according to reports in the Sun, Newcastle United are in a £20 million three-way scrap for Burnley winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson.
Newcastle United face stiff competition from Leicester City and Southampton to secure the services of Burnley’s Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who have all shown interest in the winger after his impressive campaign.
The Icelandic international has started every game for the Clarets since October, and has played a crucial role in the club’s rise into the Premier League top seven.
And, much to the delight of many of our local northerners here in the Tavern, Newcastle chief Rafa Benitez is a huge fan of the 27-year-old which could see him become a primary target in the summer. Although, the Magpies’ interest could come to nothing, as current club Burnley will look to offer Gudmundsson a fresh new deal as a reward for his efforts thus far.
This would be a great signing for Newcastle United after struggling for inspiration in wide areas during the current campaign, with the Icelandic international having one of the best seasons in his footballing career. Although, the possibility of a new contract at Turf Moor does make a deal look unlikely, with the Clarets looking to challenge for a European spot.
