Newcastle United might be walking in wonderland at the prospect of a takeover but, as ever, Rafa Benitez must be wary of reality as well. The Newcastle way right now, it seems.

Indeed, whether or not the Spaniard signs a new contract, he’s still responsible (for the rest of the month) for making decisions impacting the future of some of the players right now. May as well make the most of him while you can, right Geordies?

So, in the goalkeeping situation, the Spaniard axed stopper Rob Elliot well over a year ago now and the former Charlton ace has been training with the club's academy prospects since late season. Moreover, according to reports (via Chronicle Live), Rob Elliot's future at the club looks bleak if Benitez stays.

The 6’2’ goalkeeper is obviously surplus to requirement at Newcastle, but his departure could save another young goalkeeper’s career at Tyneside. Indeed, Freddie Woodman would get another lifeline at competing with Martin Dubravka for the pole position and continue his impressive growth as a strong goalkeeper.

According to the report, the club are desperate to keep the man who won England U20s the World Cup two summers ago and, while there has apparently been a frustration on his part, a pathway potentially opening up into the first-team may kill two birds with one stone here.

The 22-year-old played in the Magpies' short FA Cup run last season, not getting the best of opposition to showcase his ability. However, now that Elliot could be leaving, he’d be in line for more opportunities. Newcastle, as a result, might just be in line to keep one of the best British prospects around.

Perfect, right?

Well, obviously you Geordies reading this will know, anything involving the Toon rarely goes perfectly. Still, amid so much uncertainty from the bottom to the top, one thing is crystal clear - Rob Elliot's departure could open up a door for Freddie Woodman.
