Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has dropped a rather controversial statement regarding Magpies midfielder Henri Saivet.
Bruce speaks out
The 30-year-old has found himself ostracised at St. James’ Park, having been sent on various loan spells since arriving at the club in 2016.
Saivet is yet to make a competitive appearance during the 2020/21 campaign, making one outing for the reserves in the Premier League 2.
With the departure of DeAndre Yedlin to Turkish giants Galatasaray, Bruce had one place of his 25-man squad to fill, and his explanation of his choice was bizarrely blunt, displaying exactly how dire the current circumstances are on Tyneside.
Speaking during his press conference on Friday (cited by Ciaran Kelly), the English tactician revealed why he chose Christian Atsu over his Senegalese teammate.
Christian Atsu will take DeAndre Yedlin’s place in #nufc‘s 25-man squad.
“Well, there’s only him or Henri Saivet to choose from so it was pretty straightforward,” Steve Bruce said.

Transfer Tavern Verdict
A quick look at the fans’ response to the bizarre line from Bruce tells you everything you need to know, as the Toon Army are completely dismayed by the situation, branding his statement “the least professional” a manager has given and “disrespectful.”
Considering how experienced Bruce is in management, the English game and dealing with media duties, those supporters are spot on with their verdicts – we can’t imagine a more brutal way of explaining the decision to leave a player off the squad list.
Let’s hope that these comments don’t affect Saivet’s confidence a great deal, as the midfielder has not enjoyed much footballing success in recent times and this throwaway line from his manager will not help one bit.
