Newcastle United: Steve Bruce keen on Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce is keen on signing Nottingham Forest defender, Joe Worrall.

According to a report by the Sun, Worrall has caught the eye of Bruce thanks in part to his excellent form for Nottingham Forest which has seen the Reds propel themselves into second in the Championship table.

Worrall was out of favour last year as he spent the season away from the club with Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, but has returned this season to become a regular starter under Sabri Lamouchi at the City Ground.

A product of the youth academy at Forest, Worrall’s return to the club has seemingly revitalised the Reds, who have lost only once this season against table-topping West Brom.

Worrall’s nine Championship appearances this season have ensured that the Reds have managed to keep a consistent defence in the main under Lamouchi, something which can be attributed to Forest only conceding nine goals so far this season.

The defender wasn’t ever far from a controversy last season while at Rangers and drew the wrath of manager Steven Gerrard when he was caught on camera making an abusive comment in the direction of bitter rivals, Celtic.

However, he appears to have found his feet again back at his boyhood club, and once again played a crucial role yesterday as the Reds saw off Brentford at the City Ground with a 1-o win. In fact, only Fabian Schar (2.9) is averaging more tackles per game (1.2 via WhoScored) than Worrall when compared to the Toon’s current central defenders, while his 5.5 clearances are only bettered by Jamaal Lascelles with 5.6 over the same period.

Newcastle are looking desperate already so it’s little surprise to see them being linked with some of the better defenders in the Championship.

Worrall is right up there in terms of form this year, and at 22, he has plenty of scope to improve and get even better.

Obviously, Forest will want to keep their main man at the back, but Premier League temptations might well prove a lure for Worrall.
