The prospective takeover of Newcastle United could see Jonjo Shelvey move to West Ham United in the upcoming summer transfer window, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider.
Indeed, if the proposed takeover at St. James’ Park by the Saudi-led consortium is to be fully approved by the Premier League before the window officially opens, then it could well see some player departures in addition to potential incomings.
Whelan has urged Shelvey to consider a move to West Ham this summer, as the former Leeds United and Coventry City striker suggested that the central midfield player would fit the bill at the London Stadium.
Would you let Shelvey leave after the takeover?
Shelvey only signed a new contract in the North East in March but the prospect of new ownership has put the midfielder’s future at the Tyneside club in doubt.
Football Insider understands that the Hammers are keen to reignite their long-standing interest in the Englishman in spite of the three-year deal that he has recently signed.
Having grown up in Romford, London, Shelvey is a fan of The Irons and has even bought a house next to their Rush Green training headquarters, as per the outlet.
When asked if the 27-year old would be a welcome addition to David Moyes’ side, Whelan said:
“If a player is being touted around it is possible that he is not wanted. West Ham is not a bad option and I think he would suit that kind of club.
“I think they are lacking a player like that. They have Noble but he is the only one. Shelvey would fit right into that role, tenacious and has a great range of passing.
“Moyes is looking at bringing more British players into the football club. That deal would not surprise me. It could be a really good move for all parties if it does come off.”
Indeed, Shelvey has exemplified how ‘tenacious’ he is in the top flight so far, winning 2.8 duels per games this season, and has also shown his passing ability by averaging 1.9 key ones a match this season, according to Sofascore.
Whether a move down south would suit him is another question, but Whelan certainly seems to think it would.
