Newcastle United: Tony Cascarino thinks ‘value-for-money’ Martin Dubravka deserves more credit

Newcastle United: Tony Cascarino thinks ‘value-for-money’ Martin Dubravka deserves more credit - Newcastle United

Former footballer Tony Cascarino believes Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has more than proved his value to the Magpies, after helping to keep a clean sheet against Chelsea as his side snatched an unlikely victory at the death.

The Slovakian shot-stopper claimed his sixth shutout of the season after foiling the wasteful Blues, who only mustered four shots on target from their 19 attempts. With the goalkeeper signing permanently last season following a loan spell in the latter half of the 2017/18 campaign, Cascarino praised Dubravka’s capture and his performances in The Times, noting the 31-year-old’s consistency between the sticks for Steve Bruce’s side.

He said: “At £4m, Martin Dubravka is one of the best value-for-money players in the Premier League. Week upon week, the goalkeeper pulls off brilliant saves to keep Newcastle in matches. He shone against Chelsea, pulling off an acrobatic stop to deny Tammy Abraham in the second half.

“Dubravka’s performances are just as important for Steve Bruce’s team as Danny Ings’ goals for Southampton. Goalkeepers are scrutinised when they make mistakes but don’t get enough credit when they do well.”

Do you trust Newcastle to sign a striker this month?

Dubravka may only have made three saves on Saturday evening, but it could be argued that each one was crucial as Newcastle would end up stealing all the points. Given only Bournemouth and Watford have scored less often than Newcastle this season, it seems just as well that they have someone in goal that can guarantee points by keeping teams at bay at the other end of the pitch.

Cascarino is therefore pretty justified in his praise of the Newcastle goalkeeper, while the nature of their weekend victory only serves to further highlight how important Dubravka’s performances can be with regards to the team’s ability to achieve results and stay in the Premier League this season.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Isaac Hayden would grab the majority of the headlines for scoring the Magpies’ late winner, so perhaps Cascarino is rightly giving a shoutout to a player who has been arguably critical to Newcastle’s points tally this year.
