Newcastle United’s loan signing Valentino Lazaro has given an update on his future at St James’ Park.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the 23-year-old admitted “I’ve had a lot of questions about summer already.”
“But what I can say is that I’m fully focused here – I wouldn’t have come here if I wouldn’t be committed to the club. I’m happy to be here, and just focus on that.”
Many supporters should be delighted as it sounds like the midfielder is very happy and could well stay permanently, given that he looks to be an improvement on Christian Atsu on the right-hand side, as well as DeAndre Yedlin should he operate as a wing-back on that flank.
As per WhoScored, he’s averaging more key passes per game (0.8) than either of those two, as well as more crosses (0.8) and managing a higher pass completion rate (83.3%), suggesting he can prove more effective on the ball up and down that area of the pitch.
Since moving to Tyneside from Inter Milan for £1.35m, Lazaro has played in five games for Steve Bruce’s Black and Whites this season, and scored the match-winner against West Bromwich Albion away in the FA Cup fifth round. He was also sent off in just his second appearance for the club against Crystal Palace (Transfermarkt).
The Austrian international has earned 23 caps and netted three goals for the national team. His current market value is estimated at £17.1m via Transfermarkt.
Lazaro’s current contract expires on June 30th although the board do have the option to buy him in the next transfer window. The right winger’s experience in the Bundesliga and Serie A could prove vital if Bruce’s side want to push up the table, given his aforementioned stats.
