The Newcastle fans gathered around in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Rafa Benitez can improve his side further so a top 10 finish can again be achievable.

Having struggled for long periods of last season, for the Magpies to end up finishing 10th was some achievement and was largely down to the influential tactics and football intelligence of Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard has more than proven his worth over the last two seasons so this summer and our punters are praying he is financially backed to recruit some talented players.

One player many would like to see arrive at St James' Park is Craig Dawson, West Brom's valiant defender who is valued at £7.2 million on Transfermarkt. The 28-year-old was one of few players who could say they gave everything last season as the Baggies couldn't avoid relegation, despite an impressive late push.

Dawson made 32 total appearances last campaign, scoring twice and assisting 1, although his attacking contribution isn't as important seeing as he is a defender. The Englishman can play centre-back or as a right-back, either way providing stability and intelligence to help his team to victory.

It's no surprise that he wants to leave the relegated West Brom and it is similarly no surprise that already teams are queueing up for his signature. The ex-England U21 man has made a good reputation in the Premier League and that is the level he deserves to be playing at next season. Newcastle would have to act fast to beat the competition to his signature but for sure it would be worth it as he offers the Magpies experience and versatility in defence.
