Newcastle haven't been too active in the transfer market so far much to the dislike of the Toon faithful in the Transfer Tavern.

It's been heavily reported that Newcastle have been looking to add some attacking reinforcements. The Magpies have so far been linked with moves for Kenedy and Alassane Plea as Benitez looks to push his side up the table next season. According to Le10Sport today, the club have also bid for Lille midfielder, Thiago Maia.

Newcastle apparently had a loan bid turned down for the Brazilian midfielder, who can also play in defence. According to the report, Newcastle want to bring the player on loan for a year with an option to buy.

The Breakdown

Although the club recently brought in Ki Sung-yueng to cover the impending departure of Mikel Merino, Rafa Benitez still need to bring some midfield cover ahead of next season. Moreover, with Jack Colback's future uncertain and Isaac Hayden not seen as a consistent first-team starter, a deal for Maia could make sense.

The Brazilian joined Lille for a reported £11 million fee last summer and went on to make 34 appearances in Ligue 1 last season.

The Brazilian is highly rated and would add some defensive cover but if he is brought on loan, it calls into question of how much money Benitez to spend this year. Hopefully, it means Newcastle are saving cash to make a big bid for Plea rather than Mike Ashley getting up to his frugal ways again.

If Newcastle can bring the Brazilian in, it would give Benitez that defensive presence he's looking for in midfield. If Newcastle don't bring anyone in, they could be in real trouble next season.

Would you be happy with this addition Newcastle fans?
