Newcastle fans have been getting rowdy in the Transfer Tavern about lack of spending for over a year now and Rafa Benitez has been joining in – and rightly so too.
The upcoming season truly is make or break for the Spaniard at Newcastle, but for a welcome change it’s the manager who holds the cards and the owner who is left floundering.
The Magpies have the fifth largest club stadium in the country and are now heading into their second season under the Premier League money tree, so where is all the money going?
Their net spend for the 2016/17 season was a mere £11.3m, but the punters in the Transfer Tavern are growing in confidence that there could be some positive incoming over the next month. The Sun claim Matt Ritchie could be heading back to Bournemouth with Josh King moving the other way, and many on the Toon will see that as a go-faster upgrade.
Christmas could well be coming six months early as The Chronicle also believe Benitez has his sights on a club-record deal for Chelsea’s Kenedy and Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend.
However, they also say Chelsea would expect to receive around £20m and with owner Mike Ashley not filling the club with confidence of a great cash injection, they may fall short.
The club’s managing director Lee Charnley seems to be turning a blind eye on the lack of investment too, saying: “We have backed the manager, and we will keep backing the manager.”
That doesn’t seem to be the opinion of the manager and the fanbase, so if Ashley doesn’t put his hand in his rather deep pockets soon enough, Benitez’s tested loyalty will finally run out.
Do you think Rafa Benitez will be happy with Mike Ashley’s investment by the start of the season?
