Newcastle secured their long-awaited first win of the Premier League season at the weekend against high-flying Watford.

The Magpies could have gone behind in the first-half with both Gerard Deulofeu and Adrian Mariappa missing chances that should have opened the scoring for the Hornets. Rafael Benitez’s side dug in and broke the deadlock just past the hour mark with Ayoze Perez heading home. Newcastle managed to hold on to end their winless run and move out of the Premier League relegation zone.

It was far from a great performance, but three points are all that Benitez will care about. Once again, Newcastle failed to create clear-cut chances against Javi Gracia’s men and will have to improve to get a result against Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth next week. As well as fixture preparation, the Spaniard must also be keeping tabs on potential January transfer targets that could improve his squad.

One man he should attempt to sign is Manchester United outcast – Phil Jones. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the former England international joined the Red Devils after impressing for Blackburn Rovers but has never really fulfilled his potential at Old Trafford. After slipping down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, reports suggest that Jones will now be allowed to leave the club with United set to spend big on a new defender when the window reopens.

If he can sort out his injury troubles, Jones could prove to be an excellent signing for the Magpies. The Englishman would be a massive upgrade on Newcastle’s current defenders and would provide Jamaal Lascelles with a quality partner at the heart of the defence. Still only 26-years-old, Jones is yet to hit the prime of his career.

With his contract expiring in less than 12 months, Benitez could secure a bargain.
