Philipp Max could strengthen Newcastle United no end - Newcastle United

Rafael Benitez will target a new left-back in the upcoming January transfer window according to reports.

Newcastle have enjoyed a decent spell of form which has steered them away from the Premier League relegation zone in recent weeks. The Magpies are slowly climbing the standings, and talk of an impending takeover has created a sense of optimism around the club. A new owner could give the former Liverpool manager some valuable funds to use in the upcoming transfer window.

According to reports, Benitez will target a new left-back to add competition to Paul Dummett in defence. The Spaniard is eager to transition to a new formation at St. James Park and will target an offensive-minded fullback with Dummett preferring to operate in a four-man defence. The Magpies have been linked with the likes of Nicolas Tagliafico and Junior Firpo in recent weeks.

Instead, Newcastle should make a move for Augsburg defender – Philipp Max. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the German has been one of the most impressive fullbacks in the Bundesliga in recent years. His fantastic showings have gone under the radar despite registering 12 assists in the Bundesliga last season – breaking the assist record for a defender in Germany.

Max has continued his fine form into the new campaign, scoring two and assisting two already this season. The 25-year-old created 75 chances last season and has averaged an incredible 2.3 key passes per game this season – meaning he is precisely who Benitez is looking to target in the New Year. His arrival could also help Solomon Rondon continue his impressive form of late with Max possessing excellent crossing ability.

Still improving and developing – Max would a perfect fit at St. James’ Park.
