Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern really are looking forward to seeing their side get going in the Premier League with kick-off for the new season just a fortnight away.
The men from St. James’ Park are back in the big-time this season coming and Rafa Benitez will surely be relishing coming up against the likes of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola during the campaign.
For sure, the aim has to be survival for the club and new signings have certainly come in to try and help that – with Mikel Merino the latest to arrive.
A Spain U21 international, Merino certainly looks to have a bit of class around him and has joined on loan from Dortmund with the aim of trying to get more first team football.
And, if he can achieve that, there is a clause in the deal that he can make the move permanent if he plays enough times for the club – as per Mark Douglas on Twitter:
Confirmation from @BVB that the deal becomes permanent if Merino plays set number of games.

Exciting times for Newcastle fans, then, who will be hoping that Merino can put in the kind of performances that have seen him play for his nation at different age groups and get a move to BVB in the first place.
Newcastle have certainly been busy in the transfer window and Merino is the kind of player that could prove to be a real gem of a find.
Indeed, though he’s inexperienced he’s got plenty of class and under Rafa Benitez he should be able to add some calmness and discipline to his game.
A loan deal is pretty low risk, too, and the fact that he could sign permanently if he plays enough games is a real shot in the arm for him to try and prove himself.
