Making big money signings is still an alien concept to Newcastle fans, but after swooping for Miguel Almiron in January, Mike Ashley looks like he may have to open his chequebook again this summer.
The signing in question is Portuguese winger Rafa Silva (as per Portuguese outlet Radio Renascenca). Indeed, the Benfica man has been in stellar form for the Portuguese side this season and looks like he could be the man to fire Newcastle back into the top ten, although signing him could have a number of consequences throughout the club and the squad.
Rafa Benitez will be calling out for signings this summer if he is to stay on in charge and has a number of problem areas to address. His recruitment has to be good, though, and whilst Ashley is reluctant to splash the cash, when he does loosen the purse strings, Benitez cannot afford to point him in the direction of signing flops.
It’s happened before that flops have come in on what Newcastle United fans know to be big money, even if the cash they part with is peanuts compared to the figures being shelled out at top clubs. This summer, though, things have to be different as money could be set to flow freely.
So what are the potential consequences of Rafa Silva signing for Newcastle United?
Mike Ashley goes big in the market yet again
Rafa Silva may be one that the Magpies don’t know a lot about, but his current release clause at Benfica is a whopping £51.3 million. The chances are that the 36-time Portuguese champions won’t demand the full amount of that release clause, but seeing as they paid £14 million for the wide man, they’ll be keen to make a profit and it could cost Ashley well past the £20 million mark to bring him in.
It would be a move that would be greatly beneficial to the Magpies as Rafa Silva has both goals and assists aplenty in his locker that would surely help the Tyneside club kick on. At the age of 25-years-old he’s also got plenty of experience whilst still having room to grow, and if Ashley does decide to be a big-hitter in the market again then who better to take the punt on than Rafa Silva.
The Chronicle did report a while ago that the Sports Direct mogul would afford Benitez the chance to make a marquee addition in the summer in an attempt to get him to stay, after all…
Jacob Murphy’s St James Park nightmare finally ends
Jacob Murphy has not had a good time at Newcastle United, and after being signed from Norwich City for a heavy fee of £12 million it seems that the 24-year-old will be desperate to get away from Newcastle United and try and regain some form to get his career back on track. Christian Atsu is preferred to the now-on-loan Murphy, and if Rafa Silva signs, surely one of Atsu or Murphy will be off.
Give the Geordies the choice of who they want to keep and Murphy will certainly not be the one they’re keen to see sticking around. The way that Rafa Benitez splashed out on Murphy was brave, but ultimately it was a gamble that failed and now Rafa will be looking to his namesake to come in and fix up the problems at St James’ Park on their left flank.
