Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern have found themselves a saviour in Rafa Benitez, but a future on Tyneside is still surrounded with uncertainty for the Spaniard.
The Magpies have shown moments of class as Benitez’s recruitment of Chelsea’s Kenedy seems to be paying off at St James’ Park, although memories of a rather disastrous transfer window still play in the back of the manager’s mind. And, with Mike Ashley still at the club there’s always a sense of unpredictability in the air, an aura that’s caused an unhealthy relationship between the pair. However, with Ashley still impacting on the security of Benitez’s managerial position, according to reports in the Northern Echo, Rafa Benitez could stay at the club if Mike Ashley was to leave.
Subsequently, sources close to the 57-year-old have stated that Benitez would be reluctant to walk away from the job, should there be a realistic chance of Mike Ashley being replaced before the start of next season. After Amanda Staveley has continued to make Benitez’s position as manager a driving presence in her takeover of the club, all parties seemingly want to push Ashley off his position.
Indeed, after failing to secure the services of an attacking midfielder/winger that he highlighted as a position of benefit to the club’s progression prior to the window, and with all signings flooding in on temporary loan deals – disappointed is an understatement for the Spaniard.
However, according to the report, it may not be a deal-breaker.
Rafa Benitez is key to the future progression of the club as one of the world’s most experienced and established managers, though the lack of freedom to go out and spend in transfer windows is a potential deal-breaker if the Ashley era continues. Although, should takeover talks continue on in the same sluggish fashion, then Benitez may walk at the end of the season with his nemesis Mike Ashley remaining the dictator.
