Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team’s four-match winning run in the Premier League come to an end at the hands of Everton on Monday night.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash on Merseyside off the back of beating Arsenal, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, and Southampton in their preceding four league games, a streak which all but secured their place in the top-flight. Yet the Magpies were unable to record a fifth straight success as a Theo Walcott strike six minutes after the break clinched all three points for Sam Allardyce’s side, thus leaving Newcastle tenth in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated and disappointed Magpies supporters in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are hoping their team can get back to winning ways when they host basement side West Brom on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Everton with a move for Porto winger Yacine Brahimi.
And these recent reports should prompt Benitez’s Newcastle to make a summer move for £18 million-rated Toffees ace Yannick Bolasie (as per Transfermarkt), who may find regular gametime hard to come by were they to land Brahimi.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old only returned from a long-term injury at the rear end of 2017, with the DR Congo international suffering a cruciate ligament injury back in December 2016, and returning to the Toffees side 12 months later.
Thus, while there has to be some consideration that Bolasie has been out for a while and is unlikely to get straight back to his best, the winger has struggled to really prove his worth in Allardyce’s side in recent times, with just one goal to show for his 14 Premier League appearances.
As such, were Brahimi to arrive this summer, the former Crystal Palace star could slip down the pecking order at Goodison Park, which is why Newcastle must seek to take advantage as, despite the struggles, it’s clear that Bolasie is a quality winger on his day.
The 28-year-old ultimately earned a move to Everton as a result of his fine efforts for Palace, for whom he scored four goals and laid on 11 assists in the 2014/15 season, before backing that up with five goals and four assists the campaign after.
And when in full flow, Bolasie is a hugely tricky winger at Premier League level and exactly the sort defenders do not want to come up against, and were he to return to his best, he’d be an asset for any side seeking to move to the next level.
And Newcastle are one of those sides seeking to do just that.
The Magpies could struggle to land Kenedy on a permanent deal this summer such has been his impressive efforts for the club, which could leave a gaping hole down the left-hand-side – Bolasie could fill it.
And with the reliable Matt Ritchie down the other, the North East giants could have the pace and trickery of Bolasie down one side and the pinpoint crossing accuracy and determination of the Scot down the other – the strikers could seriously reap the rewards.
Thus, recent reports linking Everton with Brahimi should prompt Benitez’s Newcastle to make a summer move for 28-year-old Bolasie.
