Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the remainder of the summer transfer window, what with their team eyeing up reinforcements that can take them to the next level next season.
Rafa Benitez’s men put together a mightily impressive campaign to finish tenth in the Premier League this time round, their first season back in the top-flight after winning the Championship title just 12 months ago. However, there were obvious limitations with the Magpies squad and ones that simply need to be addressed over the summer, what with Benitez likely seeking to take the club back to its previous glories in the coming years.
As such, there are many expectant Newcastle fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Manchester City with a move for Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez.
And that’s because those reports and the possible deal emanating from them should prompt the North East giants into a summer move for £4.5 million-rated City youngster Brahim Diaz (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, Mahrez’s likely arrival at the Etihad Stadium is only likely to further bolster the attacking ranks available to manager Pep Guardiola, attacking ranks that already include the likes of Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, and Bernardo Silva.
As such, 18-year-old Diaz is likely to further struggle for regular game time at the Premier League champions if Mahrez does indeed make the move this summer, and thus a move away may be in his best interests, and indeed in the best interests of City.
And Newcastle should be ready to pounce as they eye another Kenedy-like addition at St James’ Park this summer.
The Brazilian star, like Diaz, was struggling for regular first team football at Chelsea when the Magpies took the plunge to take him on loan back in January, and they duly reaped the rewards from such an investment, what with the 22-year-old netting twice and laying on two assists for Benitez’s side.
In fact, Kenedy’s spell in the North East has opened the eyes of many, to the point that Newcastle may struggle to sign him again this summer, and the same could well happen with Diaz were they to move for him during the close season.
The attacker has played 11 times for the first team at City but has so far failed to make a direct contribution, although those 11 appearances have only yielded 200 minutes of game time, with all but one substitute cameos.
However, his efforts for the club’s youth sides, most notably the 11 goals and ten assists for the development squad at the Etihad, underlines the immense amount of talent and potential the Spaniard has, to the point that he is already a Spain Under-21 international.
Thus, like Kenedy, it appears that Diaz is waiting for the opportunity to prove himself in league football, and with City possibly signing Mahrez this summer, and thus pushing him even further down the pecking order, Newcastle must seek to lure the Spaniard to St James’ this summer.
