Newcastle United supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team pick up a fourth successive Premier League victory courtesy of a 2-1 success over Arsenal on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the North London giants having beaten Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, and Southampton in their preceding three matches, a run which all but ended any lingering fears of relegation. And the Magpies reached the 40-point mark at the weekend despite falling behind to Alexandre Lacazette’s opener, with goals from Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie securing a deserved win for Benitez’s side, thus moving them 13 points clear of the Premier League’s bottom three.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are already looking ahead to next season, what with their side almost certain to be playing Premier League football again come August.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Crystal Palace are considering offloading striker Christian Benteke this summer.
And these recent reports should prompt Benitez’s side to make a summer move for the £19.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), what with the Magpies clearly in need of striking reinforcements ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Ultimately, Newcastle deserve an enormous amount of credit for avoiding the drop this season, but if they are to reach the next level under Benitez in the coming years, they simply must bolster their attacking ranks.
Perez is the club’s top goal-scorer this season with only seven, and with fellow forwards Dwight Gayle and Joselu adding just five and four respectively this term, it’s evident that they need a proven Premier League goal-scorer with all round capabilities to lead the line next season.
And Benteke could be that man.
Other than a disappointing season at Liverpool back in 2015/16, the 27-year-old has scored at least ten goals in every Premier League campaign he has participated in, including 15 to help the Eagles avoid relegation last season.
Yes, this term has been a testing one for the Belgium international with just two goals to show for his endeavours, and while at least ten goals a season is hardly ground-breaking, those numbers would add a significant amount to Benitez’s front line at St James’ Park.
Significantly though, Benteke has all the traits the Spaniard appears to want from his forwards, with the 27-year-old strong aerially and excellent at holding the ball up, similar to Joselu, yet able to find composure in the final third to take chances, similar to Gayle.
As such, it’s clear that the Palace ace would be a perfect addition at Newcastle next season, and with the Eagles reportedly willing to offload the forward, the Magpies must seek to make a move for the Belgian star during the close season.
