Newcastle United supporters have been somewhat despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team suffer a second successive Premier League defeat on Saturday at home to basement side West Brom.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Baggies off the back of a 1-0 loss at Everton last time out, a result which brought to an end their four-match winning streak. And the North East giants were unable to get back to winning ways at St James’ Park on Saturday as a Matt Phillips strike sealed a 1-0 victory for Darren Moore’s side, which just about keeps their slim hopes of survival alive heading into the last two matches of the season.
As such, there have been many disappointed Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can at least finish the season strongly, starting with victory at Watford next weekend.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Manchester United are willing to offload Daley Blind this summer.
And these recent reports should trigger Benitez’s side into making a summer move for the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), as his defensive discipline and versatility could be a huge asset to the Newcastle boss next season.
Ultimately, the Netherlands international has struggled for regular football under United boss Jose Mourinho this season, with just 16 first team appearances, six of which coming in the Premier League, to show for his endeavours so far this term.
And with Ashley Young, a winger by trade, commanding the left back role in Mourinho’s starting eleven at present, it’s clear that Blind is hugely out of favour at Old Trafford, yet his efforts for the Red Devils since his move there back in 2014 suggest that he is hugely adept at top-flight level, and as such could still do a job there.
And that is why Newcastle must seek to lure him to the North East this summer.
Be it at left back as a possible replacement or strong competition for Paul Dummett, at centre back as another option or even in a more defensive-minded midfield role, Blind has proven his capabilities in a variety of different positions at Old Trafford, while he has even occasionally played as a wing back down the left-hand-side.
Thus, Benitez would be inundated with options of where to play the Dutchman were he to move to St James’ Park during the close season, and that will be exactly what the Spaniard wants if he is to take the Magpies to the next level next term.
Newcastle struggled at left back in the early phase of the campaign following Dummett’s injury in the first game against Tottenham, so Blind would provide cover there, while it’s arguable that Benitez has yet to settle on a first-choice centre back partner for Jamaal Lascelles – Blind could add another name to that list.
As such, the 28-year-old appears to be exactly the sort of player any manager would want in one’s squad, and with United reportedly willing to let him leave this summer, Benitez must seek to lure him to Newcastle as they prepare for a European assault next season.
