Newcastle United supporters have been somewhat despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side lose 1-0 at home to West Brom on Saturday to suffer a second successive defeat.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the division’s bottom club having lost 1-0 at Everton in their preceding league encounter, thus bringing to an end their impressive four-match winning run. And the Magpies were unable to return to winning ways on Saturday as Matt Phillips’ strike in the first half clinched all three points for Darren Moore’s side, which mathematically keeps them in with a chance of avoiding relegation this season.
As such, there have been many deflated Newcastle supporters in the Tavern this week, several of whom are hoping their team can at least finish the season strongly, starting with all three points at Watford on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Magpies fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Tottenham are eyeing up a summer move for Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson.
And these reports might well be music to the ears of those Newcastle fans at the bar, as it may well suggest that the North London club are turning their attentions away from Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old has enjoyed a magnificent season in the heart of the Newcastle backline in making 30 Premier League appearances for Benitez’s side, missing the other five only as a result of injury.
Be it making crucial blocks and leading by example at the back, or indeed coming up with vital goals at the other end, the Englishman has been a rock for the North East giants this term, and has certainly played a key part in helping to keep them in the Premier League.
And his fine efforts have reportedly attracted the interest of Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham in the last few months, what with Spurs likely on the lookout for a replacement for defender Toby Alderweireld, who looks set to leave the club this summer.
And given their other excellent options in the centre of defence, be it Jan Vertonghan, Davinson Sanchez, or Eric Dier, Pochettino is unlikely going to want a complete overhaul of his defensive unit – ultimately, he may only be looking to land one centre back this summer.
So reports that they are targeting Swansea’s Mawson, who was selected by Gareth Southgate in his last England squad, may suggest that Lascelles is no longer on their radar – they are unlikely to sign both of them this summer.
As such, these reports will surely come as music to the ears of Newcastle fans up and down the country, as Lascelles is a player they simply don’t want to lose this summer.
