Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their side seeking to build upon their impressive tenth place finish in the top-flight last term.
Rafa Benitez’s men deserve enormous credit for securing a top half finish upon their return to the top tier last season, this all after winning the Championship title just 12 months earlier. However, it’s clear from their limitations over the course of the campaign that some areas of the squad will need improving over the summer if Benitez is too indeed take the club forward, and perhaps back towards their former glories, in the 2018/19 season.
As such, there are many expectant and excited Newcastle fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be interested by recent reports linking Tottenham with a move for Eintracht Frankfurt winger Ante Rebic.
And were the North Londoners to indeed bring the Croatia international to the club, Erik Lamela is one man likely to suffer from such arrival, which is why these recent reports should prompt Newcastle into making a move for the £18 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the Argentina international hasn’t quite hit the heights since returning from injury in the rear end of 2017, with the 26-year-old managing just seven Premier League starts under Mauricio Pochettino last term, bagging just two goals along the way.
And while his compatriot was likely easing him back into action after over 12 months out with a hip problem, Lamela didn’t really give the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, and Son Heung-min much to worry about in the second half of the season to suggest that he is likely to remain on the peripheries this term.
Yet Rebic’s possible arrival is only going to serve to push him even further down the Spurs pecking order, which is why Benitez’s Newcastle must take advantage of such reports by moving for the winger, especially if they fail in their quest to land Kenedy.
The Brazilian star made a big impact at St James’ Park last term but there are no guarantees that he’ll be returning, either on loan or permanently, this season, with reports in recent months suggesting that the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in the winger.
Thus, they may have to seek alternative targets, and Lamela should certainly be on that list as, prior to injury back in October 2016, the 26-year-old was embarking upon his best stint at Spurs since making the move there back in 2013.
The winger bagged 11 goals and laid on ten assists in the 2015/16 campaign to underline his capabilities in the top-flight, and he also started the following season well with two goals and seven assists in the first few months, only for injury to cut short his campaign.
As such, it’s clear that Lamela has pedigree in the Premier League, and thus could be the sort of next-level signing Newcastle need to challenge for the European spots this season.
And with reports suggesting that Rebic could be on his way to Spurs, the North East giants must seek to capitalise by making a move for Lamela, who could be an ideal alternative to Kenedy should that deal fail to materialise.
