Report: Benitez reportedly keen on sealing Newcastle United transfer coup

Though the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been rather down in the dumps of late, news that Rafa Benitez is supposedly interested in the services of Barcelona ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen has gone down a storm.

According to El Gol Digital, the Magpies are readying a move for Barcelona’s out-of-favour goalkeeper, Cillessen. The Dutchman is stuck behind the wonderful Marc Ander Ter-Stegen in the pecking order at the Camp Nou, seemingly unable to impose himself upon first-team proceedings.

The 28-year-old has only featured in a cup match for the Catalan giants, and he’s yet to make a single league appearance this season.

It was evident throughout the summer transfer window that a goalkeeper was a priority for Benitez’s team, and the Toon were linked with numerous goalies during that period.

Rob Elliot currently shoulders the responsibility of being Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper, yet it appears that the club is still eager to acquire another shot-stopper.

Cillessen has made 11 appearances in all competitions since joining Barcelona at the start of last season and our punters clad in black and white would love to see a player of such stature arrive.

Landlord’s verdict

The Dutchman is an accomplished goalkeeper whose presence would likely enhance the quality of Rafa Benitez’s defence. At the age of 28, the former Ajax goalie still has much to offer and certainly would represent a coup on Tyneside, after a few difficult years in the transfer market.
