Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team comfortably beat fellow Premier League relegation candidates Southampton 3-0 last weekend to move up to 13th place in the division.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Saints off the back of a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in their preceding league outing, a result which did see them slip to 16th place in the table. Yet the Magpies opened up a healthy gap between themselves and the bottom three on Saturday as a brace from Kenedy alongside a Matt Ritchie strike secured an easy victory for the North East giants, thus moving them five points clear of the bottom three with just eight matches of the season remaining.
Consequently, there have been many buoyant Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from DH.be, which details the price Newcastle want to sanction Matz Sels’ exit this summer, namely ‘between 5 and 6 million euros’.
The 26-year-old made the move to St James’ Park back in 2016 and has since gone on to make just 14 senior appearances for the Magpies, the latest of which coming back in their 3-0 defeat to Oxford United in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January 2017.
Yet the Belgian star is currently enjoying a decent loan spell in his homeland with giants Anderlecht, having made 27 appearances for the club, and he must be doing something right as they are reportedly keen on landing him permanently in the summer.
And recent reports detail how much Newcastle want for the goalkeeper, namely ‘between 5 and 6 million euros’, which would cover the majority of the £6.5 million the club reportedly spent on Sels back in the summer of 2016.
But whether Anderlecht are indeed able to meet the Magpies’ demands very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Matz Sels clearly doesn’t have much of a future at Newcastle, with the arrival of Martin Dubravka in January, which they hope to make permanent, alongside other goalkeepers Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot leaving the Dutchman way down the pecking order.
However, the 26-year-old is currently performing well on loan at Belgian giants Anderlecht, so much so that the club are reportedly keen on sealing a permanent deal for the shot-stopper this summer, to which Newcastle have reportedly named their price.
The Magpies are seeking to fetch ‘between 5 and 6 million euros’ for Sels’ services come the end of the season, as they hope to recoup a decent chunk of the £6.5 million they reportedly spent on the Belgian star back in 2016.
Only time will tell whether Anderlecht are able to stump up that cash though to end Sels’ Newcastle nightmare.
