Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are still concerned about Rafa Benitez’s relationship with owner Mike Ashley moving forward, as uncertainty remains around the future of the Spaniard’s job at St. James’ Park.
Rafa Benitez took the opportunity in what’s turned out to be arguably his most difficult managerial test yet, as the Spaniard looked to make the historic Newcastle United a Premier League regular once again. Indeed, since completing the aim of promotion from last season you’d think that Mike Ashley would share nothing but support and admiration for Benitez, but this sadly hasn’t been the case as their relationship continues to live on the edge. And, it doesn’t look as if Ashley has been willing to make the effort to change this, as according to reports from Sky Sports, Mike Ashley and Rafa Benitez have only communicated face-to-face once or twice, with Lee Charnley very much acting as the middleman between the two.
Indeed, it doesn’t take a genius to realise that Mike Ashley has been less than willing to have any involvement with the club in recent times, as the sale of Newcastle United continues to uncover faults and difficulties beneath the surface. Of course, Lee Charnley plays a bigger part than many from within the club, with him having an involvement in almost all the communicating that goes on within the club, due to Ashley’s continuous lack of support.
Subsequently, Ashley’s lack of communications with manager Rafa Benitez so far during his time at St James’ Park may just be the source of the recent problems, as the Spaniard’s say in the club continues to go unseen in the eyes of the Sports Direct mogul. Therefore, in a relegation battle that the Magpies are trying desperately to avoid, an unhealthy relationship between manager and owner is another stress adding to their worries.
There’s no doubt that Mike Ashley has caused huge problems for Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez this season, as a lack of communication has the club being run in an unhealthy manner. Indeed, Lee Charnley is the unsung hero after continuously doing the dirty work for Ashley, in a role that’s seen the managing director overshadow any previous efforts made at all by the owner. Nevertheless, Ashley’s relationship offers a huge threat to the future of both Newcastle United’s hopes and Premier League status.
