Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side take another huge step towards Premier League safety courtesy of a 2-1 win at Leicester City on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Midlands outfit having beaten Southampton and Huddersfield Town in their preceding two league games, results which moved them seven points clear of the bottom three. And the Magpies now sit ten points clear of danger as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez sealed victory at the King Power Stadium, and while Claude Puel’s side did get one back late on through Jamie Vardy, it wasn’t enough to prevent a third successive win for Newcastle.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing in confidence that their team will indeed avoid the drop this term, what with Benitez’s side tenth in the league and ten points clear of the bottom three.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Tottenham could offer Vincent Janssen to Besiktas, among other clubs, for just €12 million (which equates to £10.4m) this summer.
As such, with Newcastle in need of striking reinforcements come the end of the season, the North East giants should look to stump up the cash themselves to lure the 23-year-old to St James’ Park.
Ultimately, it has been a tricky season in front of goal for Benitez’s side, what with the Magpies bagging just 33 goals in their 32 Premier League matches this season – only Burnley (31) have netted fewer of teams currently in the top ten.
And with their top-scorer Perez with a mere six, and fellow forwards Dwight Gayle and Joselu managing just five and four respectively, it’s clear what area of the squad needs serious investment this summer if they are to move to the next level under Benitez next time round.
And were Janssen available for just €12 million, it’s a deal they must look to strike.
Yes, the Netherlands international only mustered two league goals last season for Spurs, one of which coming from the penalty spot, but there’s little doubting that he has got ability having scored 31 in 49 games for AZ prior to his move to North London.
Significantly though, the 23-year-old has not really had a sustained run of games for Mauricio Pochettino’s side since his arrival back in 2016, what with Harry Kane unsurprisingly the main man at the club, and that cannot be useful for a player new to the Premier League as he attempts to adapt to his new surroundings.
Yet there’s a strong chance that he would get regular minutes at Newcastle such are Benitez’s limited striking options, and if he can show anything close to his AZ form of just two years ago, then the Magpies will have a top striker on their books.
And for just €12 million, it’s a move they simply must seek to make over the summer.
