Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team reach the 40-point mark in the Premier League courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Gunners having won each of their past three league games, with Southampton, Huddersfield Town, and Leicester City all coming up short against the Magpies. And Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal have been added to that list despite taking the lead at St James’ Park through Alexandre Lacazette, with goals from Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie securing a deserved victory for the North East giants, a result which took them to 41 points for the season and 13 clear of the bottom three.
As such, there have been many jubilant Newcastle fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom are now planning for next season what with their side well clear of the relegation zone with just five games of the campaign remaining.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Manchester United want £28 million for left back Luke Shaw this summer.
And given the 22-year-old’s obvious talent and ability, alongside Newcastle’s need to bring genuine quality to the club over the summer, the Magpies must seek to make an ambitious move for the England ace during the close season.
Ultimately, things haven’t worked out at all for the defender at Old Trafford, with a combination of injuries and a strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho contributing to his demise in the North West.
And with Ashley Young, a winger by trade, currently occupying the left back spot at United, that is as clear an indication as any that Shaw needs to leave the club this summer.
And Newcastle need to be at the front of the queue for his signature.
The 22-year-old may not have shown his best during his time at United, but there is little doubting from his days at Southampton that Shaw has got everything to go on and become an outstanding full back.
After all, the defender was being tipped by many to go on and become England’s next best left back a matter of years ago – it seems that a fresh start away from Old Trafford is what is needed for Shaw to get back to the heights that earned him a move to United in 2014.
Yes, Paul Dummett has excelled at left back for the Magpies since his return from injury back in December, but it’s clear that Shaw not only has more talent in the left back role than the 26-year-old, but also significantly more potential.
And if Newcastle are seeking to move to the next level under Benitez in the years to come, they simply have to show ambition in the transfer window. And there’s no doubt that splashing out £28 million on Shaw would show genuine ambition.
As such, the Magpies must seek to make a move for the 22-year-old ace during the close season.
