The Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Rafa Benitez can strengthen his side during the January transfer window.
Not for the first time in Newcastle’s history, events taking place off the field have overshadowed their performances on the field at times this season. The future of the club’s ownership remains unclear on Tyneside, so it seems there will be no war chest for Benitez to play with this month. However, if the Spaniard is shrew with the funds he does have available, then he should be able to bring some players of genuine Premier League quality to the club before the window slams shut.
Alternatively, Benitez may decide to offload players from his squad this month in order to accumulate the funds necessary to land his desired targets.
Shelvey has not enjoyed his most impressive season in a Newcastle shirt so far, but a move that saw him switch Tyneside for East-London could potentially have devastating consequences for The Magpies.
The 25-year-old central midfielder has divided opinion at the club since his arrival from Swansea in January 2016, as his poor discipline record has often overshadowed his fantastic ability to dictate play from the middle of the park.
Despite Shelvey’s questionable attitude, it would be an extremely poor decision to allow him to move midway through the season to a league rival also threatened by relegation.
Rather than giving up on Shelvey, Benitez must help him to improve his attitude and find a way to stop him from losing his cool on the pitch.
If Benitez allows the England international to leave St James’ Park without securing a ball-playing replacement, he would merely be giving West Ham the boost they need to climb away from the relegation zone at Newcastle’s expense.
