Ruffle some feathers, Rafa! The Sunderland star Newcastle must poach for 2017/18

Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern simply cannot wait to see their side back in the Premier League next season.

Indeed, it hasn’t been the longest hiatus away from the Premier League for the club but they are still glad that it is over.

Time now, then, to start thinking about who is going to come in during the summer window and whilst most would want some exciting fresh faces to come in and light up St. James’ Park, there’s an experienced pro they should be looking at just as keenly.

The source where he comes from, though, might just wind a few up, however, because it’s of our opinion that Jermain Defoe would be superb for Newcastle next season.

Despite getting relegated with Sunderland this year, of course, there can be no doubt that the England international has had a good season himself and would still cut it in the top flight in 2017/18.

Indeed, for a side like Newcastle who now need the experience of a seasoned Premier League veteran Defoe really is a strong option to consider – especially when you consider their other forward players.

Of all their strikers you’d say only Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic could perform in the top division and it’s a big could.

Gayle has had both injury issues and couldn’t do it for Crystal Palace in the Premier League whilst Mitrovic is a real enigma. One day he looks a world beater, the next he looks completely uninterested.

Newcastle, then, need a more reliable option up top for 2017/18 and Defoe ticks all the boxes – regardless of his Sunderland employment.
