Newcastle have completed their fourth signing of the summer.

Eager to improve his defence, Rafael Benitez activated a £3m release clause to seal a deal for Deportivo La Coruna defender – Fabian Schar. The Swiss international becomes their fourth signing of the summer following Kenedy, Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-Yueng to the club.

The arrival of Schar will add some much-needed cover at centre-back. The 26-year-old will attempt to force his way into the first-team after Florian Lejeune struck up a good partnership with Jamaal Lascelles. Following Chancel Mbemba’s departure, it was vital to replace him.

Valued at £2.7 by Transfermarkt, Schar may surprise a few on Tyneside next year if he can break into the starting eleven. Despite their relegation, the defender was a shining light in a poor season for Deportivo. He made 25 appearances in La Liga, scoring two and picking up two assists. His form continued at the World Cup with Switzerland where he played every minute of football for his country.

Schar is great with the ball at his feet but is also a solid defender. He averaged 2.4 tackles per game last season – more than any Newcastle defender; only Mohamed Diame made more in the entire squad (WhoScored). A tall, physical stopper, he should have no problems adapting to life in England and will give Newcastle a real threat from set-pieces.

The £3m price tag makes this one of the bargains of the summer.
