According to a recent report from The Newcastle Chronicle, Sean Longstaff is set to sign a new deal at Newcastle United. The 20-year-old has come up through the ranks at the North East giants in the last few years although he has made just one senior appearance for the Magpies, instead enjoying stints on loan at Kilmarnock and Blackpool in a bid for the regular football he needs to advance his development.

And reports suggest that the talented midfielder is closing in on penning a new contract with Rafa Benitez’s men, and given the woeful start their side have made to the Premier League season, alongside the frustration with things off the pitch, it does looks as though there is finally some good news on the horizon for Newcastle fans.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the 2018/19 season looks set to be an almighty struggle for the Magpies given they have picked up just two points from their opening eight league games, thus already three points adrift of safety in 19th place in the Premier League table.

And in throwing away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at Manchester United just prior to the current international break, there is much negativity and disappointment among supporters, with a third relegation in ten years a very distinct possibility.

And with owner Mike Ashley continuing to prove difficult in terms of backing manager Benitez, having only afforded the Spaniard seven signings over the summer, there really is very little to shout about for Newcastle supporters at present - yet there does appear to be some respite with Longstaff set to sign a new deal.

The midfielder has been touted for big things in the game having enjoyed temporary spells at Scottish side Kilmarnock and League One outfit Blackpool in the last few years, scoring three times for the former in the 2016/17 campaign before netting nine goals for the Tangerines last term in their 12th place finish upon return to the third tier.

And with his contract up at the end of the current campaign, the onus is on Newcastle to show a willingness to retain one of their brightest young stars, who made his debut for the club in their 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest back in August of this year - and it appears that the Magpies hierarchy are seeking to keep Longstaff at St James’ Park.

In fact, The Newcastle Chronicle have suggested that there has been much interest in the 20-year-old ‘from the continent’ to underline just how highly-rated he is among those in the game, and as such how integral it is for the North East heavyweights to keep hold of him to thus set themselves up for a bright future.

Yes, there is much doom and gloom around Newcastle both on and off the pitch at present, but an imminent agreement with Longstaff suggests that there is some good news on the horizon for those suffering Magpies fans.
