Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern are trying to look for positives after their loss against Tottenham over the opening weekend of the Premier League.
The men from St. James’ Park certainly had a top atmosphere to play in and were equal to Spurs for much of the game – if going forwards they were a little blunt.
Indeed, they would have been good value for a draw yesterday afternoon but things soon changed when Jonjo Shelvey got himself sent off.
After that, Spurs’ quality shone through and that’s led some to demand more signings for the club before the window shuts.
In a wide ranging interview – broadcast on Sky Sports – later that day, though, Mike Ashley suggested that he might not have the finance to really sign many top players and that he’d be open to selling up.
Naturally, then, fans reacted on Twitter to the chat and so here’s the best of what was said:
Listening to Mike Ashley speak makes me feel sick, hate that man with a passion.

Mike Ashley comes across as someone who owns a Premier League club and doesn’t understand football, let alone running a Premier League club

Mike Ashley’s interview? 10 years in, we’re kind of where we started. No real investment in team. Likely to flirt with relegation. Sigh.

No doubt what Mike Ashley had in mind when doing this interview. Sell the club at the highest bid
