Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to moving onto next weekend in the Premier League after opening up with a loss.
The Magpies were always going to find it hard against a Spurs side going for the league title this season but they did actually start well and were more than holding their own as the second half began too.
That was until Jonjo Shelvey got himself stupidly sent off, though, with Spurs going on to win 2-0 thanks to the numerical advantage on the pitch.
For sure, then, Shelvey has got some apologising to do to everyone involved with the club and fans on Twitter certainly weren’t pleased once the red was flourished.
Here, then, is the best of the reaction:
RED CARD! Jonjo Shelvey is shown a straight red card. Newcastle are down to ten men. 0-0. #NUFC

I was looking forward to the new @premierleague season…
Actually, scratch “Premier League” & insert “usual London favouritism”. #NUFC

Come on, that was a clear red. No unfavourable decisions here. Shelvey totally to blame

Not sure why you didnt sack him last season for something that you would have banned a fan for life for

Captain material aye?

He’s a talented player but sometimes he’s a complete and utter idiot.
