For many, Newcastle United are still the favourites to come up from the Championship – despite Brighton’s continued challenge at the top of the league.
Indeed, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who thinks it won’t be one of the two sides lifting the Championship crown in May and so a duel until then is set to take place.
What might give Newcastle the edge, though, is their added spending power with them linked with the likes of Andros Townsend before the end of this transfer window.
It would mark a swift return for the winger after he moved away from the club to Crystal Palace in the summer but should the Magpies really be going after him?
He was good last season when he joined Newcastle, make no mistake, but he looks a very different player even now for the Eagles.
That potential he had when he was at Spurs appears to have gone and whilst he’d likely do well in the Championship there has to be questions over whether he can cut it in the Premier League now.
Indeed, he only did well for Newcastle whilst nearly the rest of the squad seemed to down tools and with the club looking far more hungry and determined now, he’s going to have to go some to stand out.
The Englishman does have talent, of course, but the question marks over his ability at the highest level have only continued to grow over the last few months and Magpies fans should be careful not to celebrate any done deal too quickly.
