‘Some shift’, ‘About time you turned up’ – Newcastle United fans falling back in love with divisive star

The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern were pleased to see Ayoze Perez get off the mark this season during their 2-2 draw with Southampton yesterday. While they were disappointed not to come away with a win, Newcastle United have a very poor record on the south coast, so that was certainly an improvement.

Ayoze Perez’s form in the number 10 role has firmly divided opinion amongst Newcastle United supporters in the early stages of the season. Rafa Benitez is certainly ignoring the call to drop Perez that is being voiced by sections of the Newcastle fanbase, as Perez has featured in all eight of his starting lineups for Newcastle in the Premier League this season.

Still, the Spaniard made some progress in winning back the hearts of his greatest critics yesterday, after scoring his first goal of the season at St Mary’s. In the 51st minute, just 60 seconds after Southampton’s equaliser, Fraser Forster parried a Perez effort back into the danger zone and the latter made no mistake in capitalising on Forster’s error to slam home the rebound from an acute angle.

Indeed, the Newcastle faithful will be hoping that Perez’s goal will kick-start the season for the young Spaniard and give him the confidence to improve and repay the faith shown in him by Benitez. God knows it’s been long enough, say some of our more frequent punters.

His impact delighted the majority of Newcastle fans on twitter who were impressed with his work rate as well as his goal.

Here’s what the fans had to say on Twitter…
