Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern are awaiting the Mike Ashley era coming to a close, hopefully very soon.
Ashley hasn’t had the best of times in his 10 years at Newcastle often feuding with fans that have wanted him out after those supporters suffered two relegations during his tenure as the Magpies’ owner. Despite leaving the club in a profit, the Toon Army will be happy to see the back of the Sports Direct mogul.
Our local Geordie punters are ready to welcome potential buyer Amanda Staveley, as will Rafa Benitez who is surely hoping for some pocket money to go January sale shopping with in the next window. One way Staveley could endear herself to the fans instantly would be to bring in a goal-scorer to ensure Premier League football next season.
Indeed, none come better than England international Daniel Sturridge, according to some of our regulars. A fit Sturridge would blow away any defence as he showed in his best season with Liverpool in the 2013/14 season, when he, alongside Luis Suarez, nearly led the Reds to the title.
Benitez needs a striker who can find the back of the net and Sturridge reportedly wants to leave Liverpool in search of first-team football ahead of the World Cup. With that in mind, where better than the stage than one of the Premier League’s sleeping giants? The 27-year-old could more than stake his claim to get on the plane to Russia with a very successful second half of the season and the Toon Army would adore him. If Staveley could get this over the line in her first window, our chief barman thinks St. James Park would be a very happy place to be.
Staveley wouldn’t want a relegation in her first season according to our landlord. So, by securing Sturridge along with a couple of other signings, she would be doing her part to take Newcastle forwards and the cherry on the top…keep Benitez happy.
Newcastle fans, what are your thoughts?
