Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team suffer a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat in going down 1-0 at Tottenham on Wednesday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit off the back of losses at the hands of Everton, West Brom, and Watford, a run of form which has stunted their momentum following their four-match winning streak preceding it. And the Magpies were unable to get back to winning ways at Wembley either as a Harry Kane strike in the second half was enough for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to clinch a top four spot, with Newcastle remaining tenth despite an 18th loss of the season.
As such, there have been many disappointed Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can finish the season on a high when they host Chelsea in their final game of the campaign on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Stoke City are willing to cut their losses and sell defender Kevin Wimmer this summer.
And while the 25-year-old has evidently struggled at the bet365 Stadium, the £10.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) could well return to his best under Benitez’s guidance at Newcastle.
Ultimately, the Austria international has endured a terrible campaign at Stoke following his summer move from Tottenham, with the centre back mustering just 17 Premier League appearances for the Potters, none of which have come since their 3-0 defeat to Manchester United back in January.
And with the Staffordshire-based outfit having officially lost their Premier League status, it appears that they are planning for the Championship without retaining Wimmer, which should be of interest to Newcastle and manager Benitez.
Yes, the 25-year-old has not enjoyed a good season at Stoke this time round, but just two years ago he was playing his trade and performing solidly in the heart of Pochettino’s backline at Tottenham, what with Wimmer deputising for injured Jan Vertonghen at the start of 2016.
Thus, there is clearly a fine defender in the Austrian and one that could seriously benefit Newcastle next term, as the 25-year-old would undoubtedly learn a lot from manager Benitez, whose sides are always difficult to beat and tight defensively.
And with the second centre back position alongside Jamaal Lascelles not necessarily having been nailed down this term, Benitez may well be seeking another option in that department.
Ultimately, Wimmer needs to get out of Stoke to seek the fresh start his career needs, and based on his efforts for Tottenham in the years previous, he’s an adept Premier League defender and one that could do a job in many a team’s backline.
And with Benitez being the excellent coach that he is, he could well extract the best out of Wimmer were he to sign for Newcastle this summer. And were to do that, not only would Wimmer reap the rewards from such move, but so would the Magpies.
