Newcastle United desperately need to improve on a whole number of things after a disappointing start to their Premier League campaign.
The Magpies looked off the pace on the opening day of the Premier League campaign as they lost 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park. Indeed, Rafa Benitez will be less than pleased with how his side performed against Spurs last time out, so you can expect a number of changes to be made.
Interestingly, Newcastle United will travel to Wales to face newly-promoted Cardiff City later on today. The Bluebirds suffered a similar fate to the Magpies on the opening day of their season, but they have always been impressive in front of their home fans at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Therefore, having taken Benitez’s selection from the last game into consideration, we’ve come up with a team that we think the Spaniard could line up with against Cardiff City.

NEWCASTLE’S POTENTIAL TEAM VS CARDIFF CITY
So, we’ve gone with a 4-4-2 formation, as that is the formation that Benitez should use to get the best out of his players in the final third. The Magpies look strong in possession and were dangerous in attack when they switched things up last time out, so they should try and start brightly by making this change from the off later on today.
Benitez should put his trust in Martin Dubravka despite him conceding three goals last time out as he proved his worth last season.
In defence, supporters will be excited to see summer signing Fabian Schar make his Premier League debut at the heart of the defence, with Jamaal Lascelles lining up next to him. Meanwhile, Paul Dummett and Deandre Yedlin will do their best to get forward and contribute in the final third, while keeping things tight at the back.
The Magpies need an extra spark in the middle of midfield and Ki Sung-yeung can provide that, so he will line up next to star man Jonjo Shelvey. And, the United’s wide men will be Matt Ritchie and Kenedy, who can both provide that magic moment and a killer instinct in the final third.
Lastly, Ayoze Perez will drop to the bench as Benitez could hand a full Premier League debut to Salomon Rondon, who impressed and very almost opened his account for the club last time out. And, with last season’s woes firmly behind him, Joselu will reclaim his place at the pinnacle of the attack.
