Talks already held for Newcastle double deal; it rests on this one condition

Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are already preparing themselves for the club’s expected return to the top flight.

The Magpies are a point clear at the Championship’s summit and barring a catastrophic end to the campaign should gain automatic promotion to the Premier League, currently laying seven points ahead of Huddersfield in third.

According to The Chronicle, the Tyneside club already have ambitious targets in mind should they finish the season as expected, but Rafa Benitez wants to ensure he has a strong squad ready for the Premier League and could consequentially hand new deals to Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita.

Both were fringe players the last time Newcastle were in the top flight and drew plenty of criticism from Magpies fans in the Tavern, but have played important roles in the Championship this season – ranking fifth and 15th respectively throughout the Toon squad for second-tier appearances under Benitez.

However, new contracts for the duo will reportedly rest on a key condition – Gouffran and Anita accepting reduced terms. It’s claimed talks have already been held, but both players are said to be attracting interest from abroad.

Having endeared themselves to the St. James’ Park faithful throughout the course of the season, most Magpies fans in the Tavern would like to see Gouffran and Anita stay on at the club.
