Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are still waiting to see one of their January signings in action, as injuries continue to haunt the first-team at St James’ Park.
Indeed, the Magpies had a January transfer window to forget in many respects after failing to complete a sufficient amount of business, which later caused for Newcastle chief Rafa Benitez to prepare an internal debate. And, it looks as if this was the correct decision from the Spaniard, with the signing of a highly coveted striker resulting in the Magpies acquiring an injury-stricken Islam Slimani. But, reports suggesting that a debut was near for the Algerian have now been proven false, as according to comments made by Benitez (via journalist Martin Hardy’s personal Twitter account), Islam Slimani is set to be out for a couple more weeks after suffering a setback in training.
Many of our local residents were hoping that the 29-year-old was the striker that the club had been craving this season, but with him still sidelined through injury it’s beginning to cause for troubling times. And, the latest developments aren’t offering any hope to the Magpies’ survival bid either, as the striker’s hard work in training has seen him sidelined for the next couple of weeks due to a recurrence of the same thigh injury he carried when joining the club.

Islam Slimani is yet to feature for the Magpies since making the January loan move from Leicester City, as the Algerian continues to feel the effects of his troubling injury. Indeed, a problem that Benitez was well aware of when he looked to bring the striker to St James’ Park on deadline day, but it now seems as if this was the wrong option in what’s turned out to be a disastrous bit of business.
News of a setback to the striker that was supposedly going to save their season will be crushing, as the Magpies will now have to give an extended amount of playing time to their ineffective forwards. There really are no positives to take away from this update, with the club’s January transfer window decision-making coming into the firing line once again.
