Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last couple of days to look back at their side’s successful season to date, and indeed look ahead to a pivotal summer transfer window.
Rafa Benitez’s men went on a four-match winning streak between March and April to secure their top-flight status, with victories over Southampton, Huddersfield Town, Leicester City, and Arsenal propelling them into the top ten. And while they haven’t since been able to pick up a point, it’s clear from their efforts this term that the Magpies aren’t too far away from re-establishing themselves as a top-flight club, although this summer will be crucial to furthering those hopes.
As such, those Newcastle fans lining up at the bar are well aware that further reinforcements will indeed be needed over the summer if they are to move to the next level next time round.
And manager Benitez recently stated that the North East giants will need to break their transfer record this summer to improve next season, with their current record the £16 million they paid Real Madrid for striker Michael Owen back in 2006.
And there is only one striker who the Magpies should be breaking their transfer record for this summer, namely Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old hasn’t enjoyed the best of times since his move to Stamford Bridge back in 2016, with the forward managing just 20 Premier League appearances in their title-winning campaign last term, of which just one was a start.
And with just three starts this time round for Antonio Conte’s side, the Belgium international was shipped out on loan to Borussia Dortmund back in January to underline his difficulties at Chelsea – this all despite fellow striker Alvaro Morata not overly convincing since his summer move from Real.
And with nine goals in 14 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, it’s evident that Batshuayi has re-discovered his killer touch in front of goal, which didn’t totally desert him at Chelsea given he has still managed 19 goals in 53 appearances for the Blues, which equates to a goal every 93 minutes.
Thus, it seems that the 24-year-old more often than not scores when on the pitch, and in a Newcastle side desperate for a goal-scorer to take them to the next level, he could seriously flourish.
And it’s not as if the Magpies haven’t been creating chances this season either.
As per Squawka, Benitez’s side have created 279 chances so far this term which is the 11th highest in the division, and when one considers the amount of guilt-edge opportunities missed by the likes of Joselu, Dwight Gayle, and Ayoze Perez this term, they appear just a goal-scorer away from the next level.
And Batshuayi could be that goal-scorer, which is why he is the man they must seek to break their transfer record for this summer.
