Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side move seven points clear of the Premier League’s bottom three courtesy of a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their encounter with their fellow relegation candidates having lost just one of their previous six league games, a run of form which moved them four points clear of the bottom three ahead of Saturday’s meeting. And the Magpies have now put further distance between themselves and danger with just seven games of the season remaining as an Ayoze Perez strike ten minutes from the end clinched the three points for Benitez’s side, thus moving them up to 12th place in the table.
As such, there has been many buoyant Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can maintain their recent run between now and the end of the season, and thus secure their top-flight status for next season.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Newcastle supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Gary Cahill is one of many Chelsea stars whose future is far from certain heading into the summer.
And if the Magpies are seeking to move to the next level under Benitez next season, they should seek to land the £13.5 million-rated outcast (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, as doing so would provide Jamaal Lascelles with the perfect partner at centre-back.
Ultimately, 32-year-old Cahill has struggled for regular football under Antonio Conte this season with just 18 Premier League starts to his name thus far, only one of which has come in their last five matches.
However, it mustn’t be forgotten that the England international played a significant part in helping the Blues win the title under the Italian last season, and as such remains a hugely adept defender at top-flight level, and one that possesses a wealth of experience.
And those two factors could mean that Cahill is the perfect partner for Lascelles in the heart of the Newcastle backline.
The Magpies captain has been outstanding this season, be it coming up with last-ditch tackles and blocks in his own box or bagging crucial goals in the other, but if Benitez is going to take the team further in the coming years, more quality is needed in almost all areas of the squad.
And Cahill would bring that.
At 32, there are still years left in the Englishman, thus he could form a formidable partnership with Lascelles at centre-back, but he also has the experience both at club and international level from which the Newcastle youngster can learn and take forward into becoming an even better centre-half.
Thus, with Cahill’s future seemingly uncertain at Chelsea, Newcastle must try their hand with a move this summer to bring the 32-year-old to St James’ Park, and thus provide the perfect partner for Lascelles at centre-back.
